When the inner workings are stuck due to limescale buildup or simply because it has been sitting there for years, a little "shock" can help. Give the inner workings a few careful taps with a hammer (preferably with a rubber or wooden handle, or use a cloth in between). These taps can loosen the limescale or dirt and help free up the inner workings without damage.
Note: tap, do not hit. You want to startle the inner workings, not destroy it.
